Der Name ist vielleicht nicht ganz richtig gewählt worden, denn der neu veröffentlichte PS3 Media Streaming Server benötigt keine Playstation 3. Von einem MacBook Pro lassen sich problemlos zu einem LCD- oder Plasma-TV im eigenen Netzwerk Audio- und Video-Dateien wiedergegeben. Samsung AllShare und Samsung WiseLink werden unterstützt. MPlayer, ffmpeg oder Videolan / VLC können zum Dekodieren eingebunden werden. Spezielle Codes müssen vorher nicht installiert werden. Fertige Binaries für Linux, Mac OS X und Windows sind für den PS3 Media Server 1.50.0 erhältlich.

Die neueste Version 1.50.0 des PS3 Media Servers – auf Basis von Java programmiert und damit Plattform-unabhängig – ist kostenlos und bietet folgende Verbesserungen gegenüber der Vorgängerversion:
